New Privacy Resources Available from CMA

New Research Reports from Pew Internet

Last week Pew Internet released three new reports on different aspects of web usage by American adults: Use of web cams (download PDF) It's not all voyeuristic... but the fact 16% of internet users have viewed a person or place via a webcam gets me wondering... In daily usage, there are 2 million people a day looking at webcam images. Online Fantasy Sports Leagues (download PDF) A new category to me: sports fantasy leagues members make up 8% of adult Americans online. Do-it-yourself Information Seekers (download PDF) Over half of adult internet users have searched for repair or how-to information online, and 7 million do so on any given day.

What Google Earth and Google Video Download Pages Tell Us About Google

googleearthdownloadpage.jpg Google's on a roll. Again. Today they opened up "Google Earth":http://earth.google.com/ as a free download. The screenshot above is from their "Google Earth download page":http://desktop.google.com/download/earth/index.html and to me represents a really great focus on the non-technical user. (Click on the image to see it full size) Note how they simplified the tech requirements and put it in a context most users can understand - what kind of computer they have and how old it is. It's worth looking at the whole page to see how they've set up _three_ download buttons that do exactly the same thing. The first is "I'm good. Download GoogleEarth.exe", the second (after more traditional system requirements) says "I'm pretty sure I'm good. Download GoogleEarth.exe". And finally, after getting to possible conflicts with video cards says ""I'm feeling lucky. Download googleearth.exe". Very nice.

Live 8.. A Marketing Opportunity?

Live 8, the "20 years later" version of the original Live Aid concerts in 1985, is set for this Saturday, July 2. I have four tickets and I am looking forward to the Barrie (Toronto) event. I know that the aim of this event is to focus awareness, and action, on global poverty and the upcoming G8 Summit in Scotland. Make Poverty History - do you remember seeing any of those TV commercials with actors and musicians snapping their fingers to signify how often somoeone in tne world dies due to poverty? - is getting lots of attention and co-branding with the Canadian event. Lots of companies are supporting Live 8 but why aren't more of them using this as a better marketing tool...or to capture permission?

Five Questions For Gurval Caer - CEO Blast Radius

gurvalcaerblastradius.jpg _Gurval Caer is the CEO and President of "Blast Radius":http://www.blastradius.com/, an award-winning provider of innovative and profitable customer experiences. Blast Radius, recognized as one of Canada's 50 best privately managed companies, integrates strategy, technology and design to help global companies better align their sales, marketing and service to the needs of their customers._ *One Degree: Blast Radius is one of Canada's largest web development shops, yet most of your work is done for non-Canadian firms. Is this a historical fluke, a planned strategy, or coincidence?* Our strategy from the beginning was to build a business that targeted the Fortune 1000. We believed that they were most likely to possess the resources and vision to truly understand and realize the potential of technology to create a new kind of customer experience. That was our mission from day one. By starting in Vancouver, we were able to be more cost-effective for the West coast business community and developed relationships with companies like Nike in Portland and Nintendo in Seattle, both of which are still clients today. Now since we have opened offices in Toronto and Amsterdam, we are also developing strong relationships within Canada and Europe. *One Degree: We've seen web shops attempting to "productize" their intellectual property. Is this a wise strategy or does it have inherent weaknesses?*

Doubleclick Q1 E-mail Trend Report Available

DoubleClick just released their "Q1 2005 Email Trend Report":http://emea.doubleclick.com/WEB_ADMIN/documents/dc_Q1_05%20EMEA%20email%20trend%20report.pdf (PDF). Here's the executive summary: bq.. Amidst an increasingly difficult deliverability environment, delivery rates reached an all-time high of 91% in Q1 2005 indicating that companies are making strides with list hygiene, address collection and subscription forms. Open rates for emails continued to show a gradual decline and click-through rates dipped this quarter. The decreasing open rate trend is indicative of a widespread adoption of image blocking by email clients which impacts open rate measurement. However, the relatively stable click-through rate trend shows that subscribers that open emails are continuing to click on calls to action despite industry challenges with spam.

Five Days to Increase Your Newsletter Subscriptions - Day 4

Have you checked your subscription confirmation page and welcome email messages lately? These are your 'first impression' opportunities to new subscribers and worth the attention you pay your newsletter, as well as updating on a regular basis. In Day 4 of Five Days to Increasing your Newsletter Subscriptions we look at subscription confirmations, an important contribution to the health of your subscriber list. Day 4: Subscription Confirmations The geek side of me comes out some days when I try to figure out who is using what type of email or subscription service, especially when they present a standard form that doesn't - quite - graphically fit with the rest of the website. Don't let your technology dictate user experience of your brand! And especially don't miss out an opportunity by sending a "form letter" as your Welcome message. Business publications are the worst...
